Brazil is the largest country in South America, covering 8.5 million square kilometers, organized into 26 states and a federal district grouped into five regions: the North Region with seven Amazonian states such as Amazonas and Pará; the Northeast with nine states such as Bahia and Pernambuco; the Central-West with Mato Grosso and Goiás plus the Federal District of Brasília; the Southeast with São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo; and the South with Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. The Brazilian Amazon represents 60% of the entire Amazon rainforest, the Southeast concentrates the largest population and economic activity, with São Paulo as the country´s wealthiest state, while states such as Amapá, Pernambuco, and Alagoas have the highest rates of violence and the Federal District, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo have the lowest. In this Risk, the São Paulo-Rio de Janeiro axis is the strategic economic center, the northern Amazon is an extensive territory requiring a major deployment, the Northeast is a densely populated coastal region, and whoever controls Brasília dominates the political center. The southern states connect with Argentina and Uruguay, and controlling the Atlantic coasts gives you naval reach toward Africa and Europe.
