The Baltic Sea region is a semi-enclosed sea covering 398,000 square kilometers and bordered by nine coastal countries: Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, and Russia, with the enclave of Kaliningrad. It is divided into subregions such as the Gulf of Bothnia between Sweden and Finland, the Gulf of Finland toward Saint Petersburg, the Gulf of Riga, the Baltic proper, and the Danish straits connecting it with the North Sea. It is one of the world´s most congested maritime areas, with oil tanker and natural gas routes, high-risk spill areas between Denmark and Saint Petersburg, and zones north and south of Gotland with heavy traffic from large vessels. In this Risk, the Danish straits are critical bottlenecks connecting the Baltic with the Atlantic, the Gulf of Finland is a gateway to Russia, and controlling Sweden, Finland, and the Baltic states gives you dominance over the inland sea. Kaliningrad is an isolated Russian enclave requiring special defense, and whoever controls the coast can cut supply routes between northern and eastern Europe.
