The Principality of Asturias is organized into eight functional regions grouping its 78 municipalities: Oviedo, with 21 municipalities and the regional capital; Gijón, with three municipalities and 301,000 inhabitants across 518 square kilometers; Avilés in the industrial zone; Eastern Asturias with the Picos de Europa; Western Asturias; Caudal; Nalón; and the Cider Region. The region has 200 kilometers of Cantabrian coastline with beaches such as Gulpiyuri and Cuevas del Buxu, the Picos de Europa reach 2,648 meters at Torre de Cerredo, and Asturian cuisine, with fabada and cider, is part of the intangible cultural heritage. In this Risk, the Oviedo region is the central hub with the highest density of territories, Gijón and Avilés are strategic ports requiring naval defense, and the east with the Picos is a natural fortress toward Cantabria and León. Controlling the Nalón corridor connects the mining interior with the coast, and dominating all eight regions completes a compact block between the Cantabrian Sea and the Cantabrian Mountains.
