Alcatraz, known as The Rock, was a maximum-security federal prison in operation from 1934 to 1963 on an 8.9-hectare island located 2.4 kilometers off the coast of San Francisco, in the heart of the bay. The name derives from the Spanish word Alcatraces, and the island was named in 1775 by explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala after the colonies of seabirds that inhabited it. During its 29 years as a federal penitentiary, it housed infamous criminals such as Al Capone and the Anglin brothers. In June 1962, Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin carried out the only unresolved escape in the prison´s history, digging through the walls of their cells with spoons and fleeing on an improvised raft, although their fate remains a mystery. In this Risk, the island is a naturally fortified territory surrounded by freezing waters and treacherous currents that make naval invasions difficult.
