The Abbey

The Abbey of Crime is a Spanish video game from 1987 developed by Opera Soft and designed by Paco Menéndez and Juan Delcán, inspired by Umberto Eco´s novel The Name of the Rose and set in a medieval Benedictine monastery in the 14th century where mysterious crimes are investigated. The game recreates the abbey as a matrix of interconnected screens linked by corridors, staircases, and doors, with iconic areas such as the labyrinthine library, the scriptorium where manuscripts are copied, the cloisters, the church, the monks´ cells, and secret underground passages. In this Risk map, each area of the monastery is a strategic territory: the library is the central hub and ultimate prize due to its symbolic value and central position, the cloisters are transit routes connecting the wings of the building, the scriptorium controls the flow of information, and the secret passages allow surprise movements between territories. Controlling the bell tower gives you panoramic visibility, the cells are residential areas requiring control for bonuses, and whoever controls the main entrances and basements can cut enemy supply lines within the monastic complex.
