Italy is divided into 20 regions, five of them with special autonomous status for historical, linguistic, or geographical reasons: Sicily, Sardinia, Trentino-Alto Adige, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Aosta Valley. The peninsula is one of Europe´s most seismically active areas, with 94% of municipalities exposed to landslide or flood risk according to the ItaliaFragile atlas, while regions such as Sicily, Calabria, and Campania account for most annual wildfires. The Alps form a continuous barrier in the north, marking borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia; the Po Valley is the country´s largest plain and economic engine; and the Apennines run down the spine of the peninsula to Calabria and re-emerge in Sicily. On this Risk map, the Alps are the fortified northern border with only a few passable crossings such as the Brenner and Mont Blanc, the Po Valley is a strategic corridor connecting west to east toward the Balkans, and controlling the south and the islands gives you dominance over the central Mediterranean. Sicily and Sardinia are island enclaves requiring naval defense but providing reach toward Tunisia, Libya, and African routes.
