Cantabria

Cantabria, a single-province autonomous community in northern Spain, is organized into natural regions clearly defined by mountain ranges and river valleys that have historically shaped its internal communications. The region has 284 kilometers of Cantabrian coastline and three distinct geographical areas: La Marina, the coastal strip; La Montaña, with the Picos de Europa to the southwest; and Campoo, in the upper Ebro valley. Liébana, enclosed by the limestone walls of the Picos, is one of the best-defined regions, covering 570 square kilometers, while Trasmiera occupies the eastern coast and Pas-Miera the Pasiegos valleys, famous for their cuisine. In this Risk, the mountain passes between the coast and the interior are critical bottlenecks: whoever controls the San Glorio and Palombera passes dominates access to the Meseta, while the Saja-Nansa and Besaya basins are natural corridors connecting Santander Bay with the high mountains. Liébana acts as a natural fortress at the headwaters of the Deva, while the coast requires naval defense against invasions from Asturias or the Basque Country.
