Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are a volcanic archipelago of eight islands in the eastern Atlantic, located just 100 kilometers from the African coast and 1,400 kilometers from the Iberian Peninsula, belonging to the Macaronesian region together with Madeira, the Azores, and Cape Verde. Mount Teide, on Tenerife, is Spain´s highest peak at 3,718 meters and the third-largest volcano in the world when measured from its oceanic base, while El Hierro is geologically the youngest island, at barely one million years old. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote are the oldest, at more than 20 million years old, and Lanzarote´s biosphere reserve was the first in the archipelago. On this Risk map, each island is an insular territory requiring naval defense and air control: Gran Canaria and Tenerife are the key population centers, while the western islands such as La Palma and El Hierro function as strategic flanks. Controlling the entire archipelago grants a privileged position between Europe, Africa, and the Americas, with maritime routes connecting the three continents and making the Canaries a historic geostrategic enclave since the Age of Discovery.
