How to play Risk online

Risk is the world´s most famous turn-based military strategy game: a map divided into territories and continents, with a single goal: to conquer the world. On CompeticionRisk, you can play it for free, directly in your browser, without installing anything and against real players, at your own pace. Here´s how a game works from start to finish.

3 to 6 players. The first player to complete their secret objective wins.

Start a game

A player creates the game, chooses the map, the rules and who can play (3 to 6). Games can be open (anyone can join) or closed (only the creator registers the players). When Start Game is pressed, the system automatically distributes the territories, gives each player a secret objective and sets the turn order.

The objective can be to conquer the world, control a certain number of territories or eliminate another player. Only you know yours. The first player to complete it wins the game.

The phases of your turn

1

Troop placement

You receive reinforcements and distribute them among your territories. As long as you have even one troop left in reserve, you can reposition it; once you have placed them all, your placement is complete.

2

Collect (reinforcements and cards)

Except in the first round, you automatically receive troops based on the territories and continents you control (a complete continent gives extra troops). If you have a valid card combination, you trade it in for more troops.

3

Attack

You attack neighboring enemy territories; the dice are rolled automatically. When you conquer a territory, you transfer troops to the conquered territory. If you conquer at least one territory, you receive a card at the end of your turn. To finish attacking, press Reorganize Troops.

4

Reorganize and pass

You move troops between your territories to reinforce the front. By pressing Pass Dice, your turn ends and it is the next player´s turn.

Types of rules

BeginnersYou transfer as many troops as you want when conquering. You can reorganize between connected territories (they do not have to be neighboring). You receive one card if you conquer at least one territory during your turn.
ExpertsMaximum 3 troops when conquering. You can reorganize between connected territories. One card per turn if you conquer at least one territory.
MastersMaximum 3 troops when conquering. You can reorganize only between neighboring territories. One card per turn if you conquer at least one territory.
TacticiansYou transfer as many troops as you want. You can reorganize between connected territories. One card for EACH conquered territory (maximum 5 cards; with 5 cards you cannot attack any further).
StrategistsYou transfer as many troops as you want. You can reorganize only between neighboring territories. You receive one card if you conquer at least one territory during your turn.
Single attackLike Beginners, but on each turn you can attack only a single army (the first one you attack determines whom you can continue attacking).

Modes and variants

  • Fog of war: you only see the troops in your territories and their neighboring territories, not what is happening beyond the front line.
  • Capital: each player hides a capital among their countries; if an enemy conquers it, they inherit all your troops and territories, and you are eliminated.
  • Teams: 2 vs. 2 or 3 vs. 3 games; the team wins when one of its members achieves the objective.
  • Missiles: attacks on distant territories that are not neighbors of any of yours.
  • Fortresses and Generals: provide an extra die in defense and attack respectively.
  • Turn order: random or based on placement (the player who places all their troops first plays first).
  • Random placement: the system distributes your troops among your territories at the start.
  • Alarms: they warn and take action (for example, skipping the turn) if a player takes too long to move.

Tournaments, seasons and much more

  • Tournaments: knockout competitions, individual or team-based, with prizes for the winners.
  • Seasons: periods that group activity together and crown the best players in each game with medals.
  • Clans: team up with other players and compete together in the clan rankings.
  • Challenges: personal goals you set for yourself; completing them earns points.
  • Credits and privileges: unlock benefits such as unlimited games or access to all maps.
  • Robots: add an automated player to your games if you are missing a player.
  • Experience levels: progress from Newcomer to Risk Master as you play and win.
